“living stones”

“He passed over heaps of dead and dying, and first reached a neighbouring village; it was in cinders, it was an Abare village which the Bulgarians had burnt according to the laws of war. Here, old men covered with wounds, beheld their wives, hugging their children to their bloody breasts, massacred before their faces; there, their daughters, disembowelled and breathing their last after having satisfied the natural wants of Bulgarian heroes; while others, half burnt in the flames, begged to be despatched. The earth was strewed with brains, arms, and legs.”

Dear Universe,

I need an f-ing job. A steady f-ing full-time job. I need this job so that I can get the hell out of this jacked-up living situation.

I don’t know what else to do. I put out at least one resume a day(sometimes 15) and I’ve had interviews and second interviews and lovely emails back saying that I’m overqualified, or that they’d like to hire me for this other posistion, because the posistion they actually advertised isn’t actually available, but this actually open posistion is only for weekends and subtituting and so I have to have a completely open schedule otherwise.

I can’t and won’t work retail forever. Plus getting a full-time job that can support an actual adult in retail is like finding a f-ing coelacanth; you hear it can happen, you’ve heard about them being out there but you’ve never met anyone who has done it.

I really need a f-ing break because if something doesn’t break, I will.

Thanks so much,

-D

I go hiking a few times a week. I go to various places but lately I’ve been spending most of my hiking hours at Santa Susanna Pass State Historic Park. It’s close by, beautiful and there are tons of trails to explore. The variety of difficulties and cool stuff to see keep me from getting bored.

This park is a hidden treasure in the San Fernando Valley. It hosts a waterfall (usually dry), indiginous archological sites, the remains of the infamous Spahn Ranch and a stagecoach road so dangerous they called it the Devil’s Slide.

This morning Xochi and I arrived to find this sign posted. It was not here last week. It breaks my heart that soon the only people who will be enjoying this park are the homeless (whose abandoned campsites I occasionally come across) and the hooligans. No more will families, dog walkers and equestrians be able to get away from the hustle of Topanga Canyon Rd. No more will they hear the train whistle ringing off the cliff walls.

The adjacent Chatworth Park South has been closed for three or so years and will be closed indefinitely due to reported lead contamination. They cannot and will not pay for clean up or post signs and allow people to choose for themselves whether the risk is worth it. Hooligans (myself included) have still found ways in and the trails are still pretty well worn.

How many of the city’s wilder areas are going to disappear? How long until we have no choice but to drive out to Griffith Park or Topanga to get some dirt under our feet?

Please lend your support to Save Our State Parks.

Edit: According to SaveStateParks.org. 70 parks are on this list of proposed closures. Some may already be closed, the rest will be closed by this coming July. Some of these are indanger of being sold to developers, who want to build highspeed raillines, gold and oil exploration, toll roads, wind farms and motorsports parks.
